DNA Hydrogel Baubles

They are a selection of different DNA hydrogel baubles. The two colours show two different types of DNA hydrogels. They both have the same structure and physical properties, but their DNA sequence is different to one another, so there is no mixing between the two gels thus causing them to be entangled, yet separate. Diamond Nano-Forest

Displayed is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of a pillar-like nanostructure etched into a diamond surface via reactive ion etching (RIE). Such nanostructures allow the reduction of the reflectivity of a surface and are widely referred to as moth-eye nanostructures. From: Louise Kaeswurm

Neuri Christmas

Six-color fluorescence microscopy (5× STED + 1× confocal) in fixed rat hippocampal primary neurons enabled by combining conventional and HCage flurophores developed by Alexey Butkevich. The image shows inhibitory (Gephyrin, red) and excitatory (PSD95, blue) postsynaptic sites with the presynaptic counterpart (Bassoon, yellow) in the context of the membrane associated periodic actin cytoskeleton (beta-II-spectrin, white) and vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (vGLUT1, green). Pseudo volume labelling via actin labelling with phalloidin in cyan. Scale bar is 10 µm. From: Angel Rafael Cereceda Delgado

Through the Viral Lense

A false-color negative-stain electron micrograph of an uncultured giant virus particle found in a soil sample from Harvard Forest, MA, USA.
The sample site at Harvard Forest is warmed constantly at 5°C above ambient temperture to simulate warmer climate conditions.
In collaboration with Dr. Jeff Blanchard, we study the diversity of viruses by electron microscopy, metagenomics, and culturing to forecast temperature-related changes in the soil microbiome. From Ulli Mersdorf and Matthias Fischer
