Mentoring and Career Development
Minerva-FemmeNet is a network for female junior scientists – from graduate to top qualified scientist – working in the Max Planck Society. Its aim is to pass on the expert knowledge of experienced female scientists – including former institute members – by mentoring junior female scientists. Over 300 mentors from research and industry make themselves available on a voluntary basis; most of them have already gained professional experience and are adept at balancing family life with a career. These mentors are based around the world – in Germany, England, France, Spain, the USA, and Japan – and advise mentees on all career-related issues so that they may maximize their potential when planning their careers. Mentors can impart specific knowledge and expertise as well as facilitate professional networking by helping their protégé establish contacts.
The Max Planck Society offers selected female scientists (postdocs) the opportunity to participate in the "Sign up! Career Building" seminar program. The aim of this one-year training and networking program is to prepare high potential female postdocs for managerial roles in modern science companies. The program imparts leadership knowledge and supports female talent through a career-oriented network.
Within the Elisabeth-Schiemann-Kolleg scientific members of the Max Planck Society foster the careers of excellent female scientists after their postdoc phase, helping them to succeed on their way to a possible appointment as a tenured professor or as a director of a research institution. The Kolleg offers a platform for transdisciplinary scientific exchange. The support of the Elisabeth-Schiemann-Kolleg consists of support and advice. The ideal Elisabeth Schiemann Fellow has excelled in research after her PhD as a postdoc in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science or a technical discipline. She is about to start supervising PhD students independently as a group leader, junior professor or while working towards her habilitation. Where and how she is employed is immaterial.
